What You Will Be Doing:
We are seeking a Lead Data Steward to join our team. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide leadership in design sessions with various stakeholders, manage data quality, and ensure data governance. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in data stewardship, data analysis, and process improvement, and will drive the mission of making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership in design sessions with Data Stewards, Data Engineers, Engineering teams, Data Scientists, Product Managers, and business/IT stakeholders.
- Understand business capability needs and processes through collaboration with Product Managers and other stakeholders.
- Identify gaps in requirements based on business subject matter expertise.
- Participate in data scraping, curation, and compilation efforts ensuring high-quality data.
- Implement and utilize data solutions for analysis and profiling using tools like SQL, Postman, R, or Python.
- Lead discussions to document business logic and data sources across organizations.
- Drive Open Data efforts to strengthen organizational effectiveness.
- Lead training sessions on data governance, quality, wrangling, and best practices.
- Assist Senior Data Stewards by sharing best practices.
- Serve as a point of contact for other stewardship resources.
- Collaborate with teams to align delivery dates and integration efforts.
- Define data quality rules and implement monitoring, reporting, and remediation solutions.
- Advocate for data stewardship and mentor stewards to align with the mission.
- Set strategy for automated data quality monitoring and perform root cause analysis for data quality issues.
- Coordinate intake and resolution of data support tickets.
- Support data migration from legacy systems and manage data inserts and updates.
- Partner with the Data Governance organization to ensure data security and appropriate access management.
- Identify process gaps and create documentation templates for improvement.
- Perform exploratory data analysis and data processing.
- Build prototype SQL and continuously engage with end consumers for enhancements.
- Deliver detailed technical documentation and design data catalogs.
- Apply knowledge of data management best practices and business/data domain expertise.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Science, Agriculture, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of proven experience in relevant roles.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver detailed technical documentation.
- Experience in building and supporting APIs using resource-based design principles.
- Applied experience with modern engineering technologies and data principles (e.g., Big Data, Cloud Compute, NoSQL).
- Expertise in agile development, continuous deployment, DevOps, and decision science.
- Experience mentoring junior team members.
- Data Warehousing experience.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Process improvement skills.
- Excellent time management skills.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- 6 years of experience (or 4 years with a Master's Degree, or 1 year with a PhD) in relevant areas.
- Expert level experience in a relevant business domain.
- Experience querying SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
- Experience managing data using APIs.
- Experience with scripting languages and data processing software (e.g., Python, R, ETL applications).
- Experience profiling data and reporting data quality metrics.
- Agriculture domain knowledge and/or Big Query experience.
Pay: $59.50 – $85 /hr.
