How a Layoff May Actually HELP Your Career

Share This:

Another day, another round of technology layoffs. In the past two weeks, there have been nearly 14,000 recent layoffs from Twitter and Meta alone.

If you’ve been laid off, you understand the anxiety of losing your job while trying to find a new one.

But there may be a silver lining hiding within this difficult transition. Being laid off allows you to reset, react, and reconnect – and may even give you more control over your professional destiny.

Read on for some tips on bouncing back from a layoff, and let Technology Partners help with your next steps.

Reset

Layoffs are not easy. They may leave you doubting your capabilities and wondering why your role was identified as dispensable. Try not to take it personally. More than 50 percent of firms anticipate a reduction in overall headcount in the next six to 12 months, according to a PwC survey.

If you’ve been laid off, it may be time to reset your mindset. If you can afford to take a breather, financially speaking, it may be a good move to assess your current situation, determine your future career goals, and spend some time doing things you enjoy.

React

The worst thing you can do after a layoff is get stagnant.

You never know when a company will call you for an interview, so it’s best to be prepared. Update your resume and other personal marketing materials with the latest and greatest buzzwords, achievements, and soft skills.

Getting active on LinkedIn is another thing to consider. The social networking platform is home to millions of job seekers, recruiters, and hiring managers seeking to connect. Make sure your profile is accurate and up to date. Engage with other peoples’ posts for maximum visibility and reach as you try to build up your network.

Reconnect

Networking is one of the most important parts of a successful career journey. Sometimes, we get so lost in the weeds of what we’re working on that we forget to connect with friends, colleagues, and past co-workers.

While you work on bouncing back from a technology layoff, you may find time to check in with some of these connections. Go out for coffee. Take a short trip together. Or simply pick up the phone for a quick chat.

Let Technology Partners Help

Helping job seekers for nearly 30 years, Technology Partners is the premier staffing solutions company in the St. Louis region. Since joining Technology Partners in 2006, Client Manager Jason Keiser has helped organizations persevere through the most monumental labor market challenges in recent history.

The Great Recession in 2008 and the ongoing Great Resignation spurred by the COVID pandemic left many talent acquisition organizations reeling as they dealt with never-before-seen shifts to the employment landscape.

“Our clients and talent are depending on us for expertise during these moments,” Keiser said. “The same things that made us attractive back in 2008 when the recession hit are the same things that make us attractive now. Transparency. An ethical approach. A focus on relationships…this all matters to them.”
