It is with both a joyful and heavy heart that we introduce you to Something Extra's 130th episode. Lisa and the podcast team had the honor of spending time with Halbert Sullivan last Tuesday which left us encouraged and empowered. Friday morning brought us the terrible news that our dear friend, Halbert, passed away on Thursday. Our city has lost an incredible man, but his life and legacy will live on in the thousands of lives Halbert touched while on earth. We hope that in listening to this episode that you will be left feeling inspired, hearing a true-life story of redemption, transformation, and profound impact.
Bio: Halbert Sullivan is the Founding President/CEO of Fathers and Families Support Center (FFSC), (formerly the Fathers’ Support Center, St. Louis).
FFSC was founded in 1997 as the Fathers’ Support Center, St. Louis and the aim is to promote the fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives through intensive job training, group therapy, community service, and parenting workshops. Since its inception, FFSC has served more than 17,500 fathers and their families, transitioning non- participating fathers to a position of involvement and equity in the lives of over 42,500 children.
Mr. Sullivan has been widely recognized for his dedicated service, including awards from the NAACP, the Missouri Association for Social Welfare, and the Governor of Missouri. In 2017, Mr. Sullivan received the Martin Luther King Jr. Social Service Award presented by St. Louis University and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; the National Service to Community presented by the National Fathers and Families Coalition of America and the 2017 Nonprofit Executive of the Year Award at the 18th Annual Salute to Excellence in Business Awards & Networking Luncheon. At the 19th Annual International Fatherhood Conference (June 2017), Mr. Sullivan received The Lifetime Achievement Award for exemplary leadership in the field of Fatherhood Development. 2018 the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative medallion for Continued Social Service presented by the St. Louis University and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; 2018 The Humanitarian Award presented by the Coalition of Black Trades Union; 2019 The Community Leader of the Year by Children's Trust Fund State of Missouri; 2019 the Partner of the Year Award, Presented by Prosperity Connection; and 2019 the Community Service Award Presented by the Eta Boule Foundation
Mr. Sullivan has served as the Primary Investigator or Co-Investigator on several research projects, including Engaging Fathers in Positive Parenting, Family Formation & Employment Placement; Healthy Relationship Skills for Fragile Families; and currently the Parents and Children Together Reach Project conducted by Mathematica Policy Research in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Sullivan holds a Bachelor’s degree from Fontbonne University and a Master of Social Work from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis and Certificate in Business Management from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.
