2018 Insights: 7 In-Demand Programming Languages

If you want to excel in computer programming, it is important to keep up-to-date with new programming languages that develop or become prominent. Developers must regularly hone their skills to impress employers, and if you're looking to score a job in 2018, there are a few key programming languages you may want to learn.

Some of the top programming languages employers are looking for, according to an analysis of job ads from Indeed.com, include the following:

  • Java:

    Around 62,000 jobs posted on Indeed.com list Java as a coding language potential new hires need to know in 2018. This is a slight decline compared with the 68,000 jobs demanding java skills in 2017.

  • Python:

    There were 46,000 jobs listed on Indeed.com in 2018 that required Python compared with 41,000 jobs seeking developers well versed in this programming language in 2017.

  • JavaScript:

    While 40,000 jobs in 2017 demanded knowledge of JavaScript, there was a slight year-to-year decline and just 38,000 employers were seeking JavaScript programmers in 2018.

  • C++:

    A total of 21,000 jobs posted in 2018 asked for C++ skills compared with 33,000 in 2017.

  • C#:

    There were 27,000 jobs posted requesting candidates knew C# in 2017 compared with 28,000 jobs in 2018.

  • PHP:

    There was increased demand for programmers with PHP knowledge, as there were 14,000 jobs requesting this skill in 2018 compared with 13,000 in 2017.

  • Perl:

    A total of 14,000 jobs listed required Perl knowledge in 2018 compared with 17,000 in 2017.

Because so many employers want to hire developers with knowledge of these programming languages, you should be able to find a great job if you know one or more of them. However, you'll need to make sure the right employers are able to find you.
