Insights Contributor August 6, 2026

Discover how lived experiences can transform into a catalyst for global innovation with guest Jim Atwater, Founder and CEO of InReturn Strategies and Aptly.org. In this episode, Atwater opens up about navigating progressive hearing loss and how those pivotal moments inspired him to revolutionize the way businesses view untapped talent. Tune in to explore how shifting the conversation from social charity to an $18 trillion economic market can unlock untapped business potential and redefine modern leadership.
Bio: Jim Atwater is the Founder and CEO of InReturn Strategies, a company focused on helping organizations uncover the economic opportunity within the differently abled consumer market. Over the course of his career, Jim has built a reputation as a strategic leader who bridges business growth, cultural change, and social innovation.
Before launching InReturn Strategies, Jim spent nearly 15 years at American Century Investments, where he helped lead enterprise-wide operational transformation initiatives impacting hundreds of employees and generating millions in recurring value. His work combined process improvement, leadership development, organizational processes, and strategic change management - a collective of experience that would later shape his entrepreneurial approach.
Jim’s leadership journey evolved from corporate transformation into market creation. He founded HeaR, a consultancy that helped healthcare organizations better understand and serve the hard-of hearing community as both consumers and talent. The work influenced some of the region’s first deaf-inclusive healthcare advertising efforts and positioned Jim as an emerging voice on the intersection of business, accessibility, and consumer engagement.
At InReturn Strategies, Jim has continued expanding that vision at scale. Under his leadership, the organization launched a technology platform connecting thousands of social sector and educational organizations, developed innovative hiring and engagement systems, and most recently began building Elevate Purple - a first-of-its-kind data initiative designed to define the differently abled consumer economy. The organization’s work helps transform lived experiences into actionable insights that businesses can use to create mutual social and economic value.
To work in conjunction with InReturn Strategies, Jim most recently founded Aptly.org, a nonprofit initiative designed to give families and individuals that make up the differently abled community a stronger voice through personal discovery tools that help individuals better define their interests, capabilities, preferences, and aspirations. Jim’s vision for Aptly was not centered on charity, but on translation - a connection creating a bridge between people seeking meaningful participation in the economy and companies seeking better ways to build products, services, experiences, and workforce opportunities in equal partnership with this community.
Beyond business, Jim has served in roles with organizations including Points of Light, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Gallaudet University, and board positions at local Kansas City non profits such as The Golden Scoop and The Whole Person, where he consistently championed sustainable models that create both economic and human impact.
Known for his ability to connect vision with practical execution, Jim believes the future belongs to organizations willing to rethink who they serve, how they grow, and where untapped value truly exists.
Something Extra: "There's no addition by subtraction...the differently-ables have been subtracted from life and social and economics for a long time...provide the systems that people need to be able to be adding."
