Our daughter, Ally, recently had the amazing opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game and her favorite Cardinal – Albert Pujols – caught the ball.
Lisa and I have always said that Ally has been one of our greatest teachers in life. As we reflected on the lessons she taught us from this experience, there are many and we thought we would share some of them with you.
She has no fear.
When the opportunity presented itself, Ally did not hesitate in saying “yes.” She doesn’t play softball or baseball. However, she has no fear of failure, and the thought never crossed her mind that she didn’t have what it took to get the job done.
She really doesn’t let what other people think get in her way. She is herself and is very comfortable in her own skin.
She is genuinely appreciative.
I worked with her for about an hour on the morning of the game, honing the delivery she would soon make in front of several thousand people.
When people came up to compliment her after the perfect strike, she almost always said, “My dad taught me.” We cannot succeed alone and giving people credit along the way is such a beautiful way to live.
She celebrates a job well done.
One of our dear friends told her afterwards that she was a star. Ally very quickly replied, “a superstar.” She was very joyful about the whole experience as she came running up to me afterwards.
Ally is a hugger. It has been said that a strong hug can be more powerful than a thousand words. If you have ever received an Ally hug, then you know how true this is.
In the book, “The Power of Moments,” the authors talk about pits and peaks in our life. Peaks are those pinnacle experiences that are often defining moments, times that make us feel engaged, joyful, motivated – times to be savored and remembered.
Life is generally lived in the in-between, but my family is sure grateful for the peak we experienced at Busch Stadium.
Our prayer for you is that you have peaks in your life, too.
