Four Ways to Increase Your Productivity in 2017

Share This:

Whether you are a job seeker or an employee, productivity is key to success. Far too many people fail to get enough done in a day because they do not use their time effectively or efficiently. You do not have to be one of them. With a new year beginning, now is the time to resolve to find ways to increase your productivity. These four tips can help:

  1. Limit multitasking.

While you may think you are good at juggling many tasks at once, the fact is the human brain isn't good at multitasking. You will be less efficient at each of the activities you are trying to do and more likely to make mistakes that take more of your time to unravel. Create a schedule where you focus on one task or project for a fixed amount of time. If you finish early, move on to the next project. If you need more time, determine if you have to adjust the rest of your day.

  2. Commit to listening.

Many people “listen” by hearing what is being said on the surface and spending their time thinking about formulating their own reply. If you really take the time to be an active listener, you will be surprised at all you can learn. You'll also deepen your connections with the people in your life and get more out of each conversation. Head into conversations with minimal conclusions drawn.

  3. Put down your phone!

Far too many people are constantly checking their phones and are always connected. Checking your phone all the time takes your attention away from important tasks and makes it harder for you to accomplish things that actually need to get done. You'll be sucked into just replying to that email or text and will end up wasting a good portion of your day if you check your phone all the time. It also shows that you view whatever is going on with your phone as more important than the people in the room with you.

  4. Turn off the TV.

It is common for people (especially those working at home) to try to get work done with the TV on for background noise, but this distraction can reduce your focus and make it harder for you to get tasks accomplished in an efficient way and to the best of your abilities. You may not think that you are paying attention to whatever is playing on the monitor, but you are probably dedicating at least some of your mental resources to that multimedia.
