Do You Really Want the Job? Show Them Why They Have to Hire You!

Finding a job in the technology field can be challenging, as there is a lot of competition. When you find a position that you think would be a perfect fit, the stakes are high. You want to get a great job to advance your career, do interesting work, and get your foot in the door with a great company. The only question is… how?  Competition for those jobs can be very high and just because you really want the job doesn’t mean they are going to hand you the open position. What can you do to maximize your chances of being hired for a position you are passionate about.

The good news is, there are some steps you can take to show why you are an essential hire for a company.

Study the job description so you can show how you fit.

You want to be able to demonstrate that your skills match what the company is looking for. You also want to be able to show exactly how you can add value to the company. The more specific you can be in showcasing you have the particular skills the employer wants, the better your chances are to be called in for an interview.

Make your cover letter personal.

Think about what the hiring manager would be looking for, and make sure your letter shows you in the best possible light as the perfect candidate for the open position. You can template a cover letter but update certain areas with details relating directly to this job. That saves you work from writing a cover letter each time but also allows you to make it sound personalized for that open position.

Find mutual connections.

Consider tapping into your personal and professional network to see if anyone has inside info about the company or has connections there. The more you can learn about the company from people who know how it works, the better prepared you can be to make a good impression and to impress those doing the hiring. LinkedIn can be a great tool for this. You might not have a first-level connection but you could have a second or third-level connection. Find the mutual connection between an employee at the company and use your networking skills to help your job search.

Learn as much as you can about the company and show off your knowledge.

Use your network, the Internet, and other resources to learn all you can.  Show off your knowledge in cover letters, phone and in-person interviews, and email communication so the hiring manager will know how interested you are in the organization. The more you can internalize about the company, the more information you will be able to incorporate into your job.
