Struggling in the Job Search? How to Take a Step Back

Written by Insights Contributor | Aug 23, 2016 3:34:53 PM

If you are searching for work in information technology and you're having a hard time getting hired, you may need to take a step back and re-evaluate. It can be frustrating to send out your resume all the time and not see any interest, but there may be reasons why your job hunt is stalled. Taking the time to review your job-search efforts can help you to get back on the right track.

When you consider the steps you are taking to find work, here are a few tips to help you look at the big picture:

Examine your resume and cover letter.

Compare it to the job descriptions of the positions you are applying for. Does your resume show that you really are a good fit? Are you tailoring your cover letter to each individual job or just sending out a generic form? You want to make the most favorable first impression possible, which means clearly illustrating why you are the perfect candidate for the open positions you're trying to get hired to fill. Show the value you will bring to the company. Make them want to hire you and regret going in another direction (or at least think twice about not bringing you in for an interview).

Consider your application process.

Do you send your resume off and not follow up or reach out to talk with HR or the hiring manager? You may need to be more proactive and do more to show potential employers you are seriously interested in the job and you are someone they should take a look at. Find a balance between being a pest and following up. It can be a delicate and subjective timeline, but it can lead to some awesome results.

Think about getting help.

You can work with a recruiter or a staffing agency to find out about open positions and to tap into their professional network. Getting help from staffing professionals also makes it possible to find out about more opportunities which you might otherwise be unaware of. Did you know that recruiters don’t charge you a fee for finding you a job? They have access to career options that might not be public, so you are able to make yourself available to more jobs through contacting a local IT recruiter.
