What Perks Can You Negotiate in Your Next Job Offer

If you're looking for a job in the technology field, you may find that your skills are in high-demand. This is especially true if you have a lot of experience or have unique abilities which will make you an asset to any organization. Your in-demand skills combined with a candidate-driven market give you the leverage. Having the leverage in the negotiation process is something always to keep in the back of your mind.

As you go through your job search, you are likely focused on leveraging your talents to get the best possible position. One key thing to remember is, the perks and benefits of your job do not begin and end with salary alone. What you get paid is important, but there are also some other things you can negotiate which can provide you with big benefits. For example, if you're given a job offer, you may wish to think about asking for:

A sign-on bonus

Companies may pay you a bonus when you agree to come and work for them. With this perk, along with a number of the other options listed below, the worst thing that can happen is receiving “No” as an answer.

A relocation allowance

If you are planning on moving to a different location to take the job, a relocation bonus can reward you for your troubles and offset the cost of a move.

A flexible work schedule

Flex time is becoming a more popular workplace perk because it comes at no cost or is very low cost to employers. Flex ime is also a big benefit to employees who can achieve a better work/life balance if they're given the opportunity to be more flexible in when they do their jobs. This perk is one that you can mention during the job search process and then re-visit after the company realizes you are a great fit for a more flexible schedule.

More time off

Vacation pay can give you more time to relax and do the things you love. When you're looking for a new job, see how much vacation time may be available to you.

More maternity or paternity leave

Staying home with the kids for a time is a goal of every new parent. With more paternity or maternity leave, you will have more time to bond with your child. This perk is another one to get in writing so it’s available when the situation arrives in your personal life.

Increased health benefits

Health insurance and health care can both be very costly. The better your benefits, the lower your out-of-pocket expenditures and the more peace of mind you will have in case of a health emergency.

Not all companies are going to be willing to offer these job perks, and you want to be reasonable in terms of what you are looking for. Many organizations, however, are willing to be generous with workplace benefits – especially if you have skills that are in demand in IT. Remember, if you are an in-demand candidate and the right fit for their opening, you can have the leverage in the negotiation. They don’t want to move on to their second choice because it won’t be as impactful of an addition as you will be to the organization.
