Summary

A leading provider of in vitro diagnostics relied heavily on outdated on-premise infrastructure, limiting scalability and operational efficiency. To support continued growth and modernization, the company needed to migrate over 60 applications and vast amounts of data to the cloud. Transitioning from legacy systems to a modern AWS environment presented a significant challenge, requiring minimal downtime and seamless integration across global teams.

Technology Partners successfully executed a large-scale cloud migration, transitioning critical workloads from AIX servers to Linux, upgrading Oracle databases, and re-platforming key applications. The move to AWS provided enhanced scalability, operational agility, and improved data utilization, empowering the company to accelerate its digital transformation with minimal disruption.

About our client

Our client is a global leader in in vitro diagnostics, providing innovative solutions to enhance patient care and public health. Committed to technological advancement and operational excellence, the company continuously seeks ways to improve efficiency, compliance, and data-driven decision-making.

Challenge

The organization’s dependence on legacy on-premise infrastructure was slowing progress, creating bottlenecks in operational efficiency, scalability, and system modernization. As the demand for more agile and cost-effective solutions increased, the company recognized that a transition to the cloud was essential for long-term sustainability.

However, the migration process posed significant challenges. Over 60 applications needed to be re-platformed, upgraded, and integrated into AWS, requiring close coordination across multiple teams. The company also relied on an unsupported Oracle 11g database, which required an upgrade to Oracle 19 while maintaining compatibility with existing Java applications.

Given the complexity of the transition and the global nature of the company’s operations, it was critical to ensure that the migration was executed with minimal disruption to business processes and system users.

Solution

Technology Partners led a comprehensive AWS cloud migration strategy, working closely with both technical and non-technical teams to ensure a seamless transition. The approach focused on upgrading infrastructure, modernizing applications, and integrating cloud-based automation to enhance performance and reliability.

The migration process included:

  • Workload Transition to AWS – Moving critical applications from AIX servers to Linux, optimizing performance and reducing infrastructure constraints.
  • Database Modernization – Upgrading Oracle 11g to Oracle 19, ensuring compatibility with existing Java applications and enabling better data management.
  • Application Re-Platforming – Modifying and reconfiguring C/C++ applications and shell programs to align with AWS architecture.
  • SAS Platform Migration – Upgrading the analytics platform to improve data processing and reporting capabilities.

A key factor in the project’s success was establishing strong cross-functional relationships. Technology Partners worked alongside DevOps, networking, and database administration teams, as well as non-technical business units, to ensure a collaborative and well-coordinated effort.

By leveraging AWS Database Migration Service, ECS using Fargate, S3, ALB, RDS Aurora, Oracle on RDS, Linux, Terraform, and Gitlab, the team developed a scalable, high-performance cloud environment capable of supporting the organization’s future growth.

Results

Technology Partners successfully executed the migration with minimal downtime, ensuring business continuity and uninterrupted operations. Many users were unaware that the migration had even occurred, demonstrating the effectiveness of the transition strategy.

With modern cloud infrastructure in place, the organization gained:

  • Greater Operational Agility – AWS-enabled scalability allowed for faster deployment of new applications and services.
  • Enhanced Data Utilization – Cloud-based automation improved data access, facilitating better decision-making and operational insights.
  • Improved Compliance and Security – Modernized infrastructure strengthened regulatory adherence and data protection.
  • Long-Term Cost Savings – Reducing reliance on outdated on-premise hardware lowered maintenance and operational costs.

The cloud migration positioned the company for future innovation, allowing them to focus on leveraging data, automation, and digital transformation strategies to enhance healthcare solutions.
