Arch Coal, now part of Arch Resources, is one of the largest coal producers in the United States. The company operates large-scale mining complexes and is committed to safety, operational efficiency, and the use of advanced technology to optimize resource extraction.

Challenge

Arch Coal’s blast engineering process required precise calculations for placement, measurement, and timing of explosive shots to ensure both safety and efficiency. Once a blast was designed, engineers needed to document, review, and submit reports to regulatory agencies for approval. However, existing processes relied on manual data entry and review, leading to inefficiencies, delays, and an increased risk of inaccuracies.

Engineers also faced challenges in accessing and updating blast data in real-time, particularly in remote locations where connectivity was unreliable. Solution

Technology Partners designed and developed the Ignition Point Mobile Application, a native iOS solution built specifically for Arch Coal’s operational needs.

The mobile application provided engineers with a user-friendly interface on ruggedized iPads, enabling them to visually design blasts, configure materials, and set ignition timing directly in the field. Built using XCode/Objective-C, Java, REST, and Oracle, the application delivered a powerful and reliable experience, even in remote mining locations.

One of the key capabilities of the application was its offline functionality. Engineers could continue working without an internet connection, with data automatically synchronizing once connectivity was restored. This feature ensured uninterrupted productivity, allowing engineers to focus on their tasks without disruption.

Additionally, the application streamlined compliance reporting by generating industry-standard formatted reports, reducing the administrative burden and ensuring regulatory requirements were met efficiently.
