Rebuilding a Legacy Bonus Application for a Global Workforce

Summary

A financial services company needed to modernize bonus management for tens of thousands of employees. Its legacy application used unsupported technology, lacked documented requirements, and required precise execution of complex compensation rules.

P4P by TPI helped deliver a modern bonus application that simplified compensation rule configuration. The deployment had zero reported calculation errors in production, one minor production bug, and positive user feedback.

About our client

The client is a financial services company with an international workforce of financial advisors, brokers, wealth managers, and other revenue producers.

Challenge

The company needed to manage compensation rules, objectives, and organizational hierarchies for tens of thousands of employees. Applying those rules correctly and calculating precise bonus amounts were essential requirements for a replacement application.

The legacy system relied on unsupported technology and posed security risks. Its system requirements were undocumented, so the team first needed to understand the existing application and capture the business logic behind its calculations.

The project required a modern system and accurate migration of the information used for employee compensation. The client also wanted a clearer way to define and configure complex rules while aligning development with its IT leadership's direction.

Solution

P4P by TPI reverse engineered the legacy application and documented its business rules. The team reviewed those rules with the client's subject matter experts, securing agreement throughout the process to establish a shared understanding of the requirements.

Using an agile approach, the team regularly delivered working software for business partners and stakeholders to review. These reviews kept development aligned with the people responsible for compensation and gave them opportunities to evaluate the application as it took shape.

The replacement used a progressive web application approach, with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Webpack, Knockout.js, Java microservices, and Oracle. Delivery brought together a UI/UX designer, UI developer, Java application architect, Java developer, and project manager who also served as Scrum Master.

Results

The new application simplified the definition and configuration of complex compensation rules and objectives. Its interface received positive feedback from end users, improving the experience of managing bonus calculations.

The production deployment was reported with zero calculation errors and only one minor production bug. That calculation accuracy addressed a central requirement of the replacement system: applying compensation rules precisely.

Understanding the compensation rules was central to this project. Working through them with the client's experts and reviewing working software regularly helped us build an application that was easier to use and applied those rules accurately.
