Connecting Restaurant Inventory Scheduling and Supply Ordering

Summary

A restaurant chain needed to move its back-of-house system from on-premise infrastructure to the cloud, modernize legacy components, and improve inventory management, employee scheduling, and supply ordering through real-time data.

P4P by TPI helped deliver a cloud-based back-of-house system with real-time inventory management, labor scheduling, and automated supplier ordering, improving stock visibility and supporting more efficient day-to-day restaurant operations.

About our client

The client is a national restaurant chain operating cafés. Its business combines food preparation and customer service across a network of locations.

Challenge

The company wanted to modernize the systems supporting its back-of-house operations. Moving from on-premise infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform required rewriting most system components and transferring selected components with fewer changes.

The project also needed to improve the tools used to manage daily café operations. Priorities included inventory management, purchasing, and employee scheduling, with real-time data helping staff monitor stock and use ingredients more efficiently.

Supplier integration was another important requirement. The company wanted automatic ordering of essential supplies to simplify procurement and support continuity at its cafés. The modernization needed to address those operational needs alongside the infrastructure transition.

Solution

P4P by TPI worked with the client to move the back-of-house system to Google Cloud Platform. The team combined extensive component rewrites with migration of selected existing components, adding features that used real-time data.

The solution introduced real-time inventory management and labor scheduling tools. Vendor integrations through Apigee enabled automatic supply ordering, connecting the system to the suppliers supporting café operations.

Development used Java, Spring Boot, and Angular, supported by Google Cloud services including Kubernetes, Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Dataflow, and Pub/Sub. These technologies supported the application and its data processing needs.

A lead developer, senior developer, and two mid-level developers supported delivery. The team used an agile approach and tools including Jenkins, Spinnaker, Jira, and Confluence to coordinate implementation and releases with the client.

Results

Real-time inventory management gave the client clearer visibility into stock levels. This supported better ingredient utilization and helped reduce waste as part of daily café operations.

Labor scheduling tools improved employee management and supported more efficient staffing. Automated supplier ordering streamlined procurement, helping cafés obtain essential supplies and reduce operational disruptions.

The move to the cloud was an opportunity to improve the work happening in each café. Bringing real-time inventory, scheduling, and supplier ordering into the system helped connect the technology investment to everyday operational needs.
