Cloud Migration Preserves Continuity for a Diagnostics Company

Summary

An international diagnostics company relied on unsupported on-premises infrastructure. Moving its data and more than 60 applications to the cloud required coordinated upgrades across databases, operating systems, and application code.

P4P by TPI helped migrate more than 60 applications to AWS with minimal downtime, modernizing legacy infrastructure and application components while preserving operational continuity across an international diagnostics organization.

About our client

Our client is a global leader in in vitro diagnostics, providing advanced laboratory solutions that improve patient care and public health. Through continuous innovation, the company develops technologies that enhance clinical decision-making, efficiency, and medical diagnostics worldwide.

Challenge

The company's reliance on unsupported on-premises infrastructure was holding back progress. It needed to move its data and more than 60 applications to the cloud, while maintaining the operations those systems supported. The scale of the application portfolio made the transition a substantial undertaking.

The work involved changes across several connected technologies. AIX workloads needed to move to Linux, an unsupported Oracle 11g database required an upgrade, and Java applications needed to work with the newer database version. C/C++ applications, shell programs, and the SAS platform also required modernization.

Delivery depended on cooperation across an international organization. DevOps, networking, and database administration teams needed to work alongside business units to complete the move. Coordinating these groups was essential to migrating the systems with minimal disruption.

Solution

P4P by TPI worked with the client to migrate its application portfolio and data to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The project combined infrastructure migration with updates to the components that applications relied on, addressing the legacy environment as part of the move.

The team transitioned AIX server workloads to Linux and upgraded Oracle 11g to Oracle 19. Java applications were updated to communicate with the new database version. The work also included re-platforming C/C++ applications and shell programs, along with a SAS upgrade and platform migration.

A solutions architect and four senior developers supported delivery. The team established working relationships with the client's technical specialists and business units, bringing the people responsible for infrastructure, applications, and operations into the migration effort.

The implementation used AWS Database Migration Service and cloud services including ECS with Fargate, S3, and managed database services. Terraform and GitLab supported the technical work. These tools enabled the team to carry out the migration and the related platform changes.

Results

More than 60 applications were migrated to AWS, replacing their reliance on unsupported on-premises infrastructure. The completed work included the move from AIX to Linux, the Oracle database upgrade, and updates to applications and supporting programs.

The migration was delivered with minimal downtime. Some users were unaware that the transition had taken place, reflecting how little disruption they experienced. The company maintained operational continuity while its technology environment changed.

Moving more than 60 applications required careful work across the technology stack and strong relationships with the people who depended on those systems. We helped the client modernize its environment while keeping disruption low and day-to-day operations moving.
