TPI Spotlight: HR Administrator Kayla Carns

Since joining Technology Partners as a Human Resources Administrator in 2021, Kayla Carns has played a big role in driving new projects forward. Whether it be an innovative HR program or a critical immigration initiative, Kayla’s efforts have a direct impact on the people and overall culture of the company.

And this level of fulfillment makes a difference during one of the most interesting – and challenging – eras for human resources professionals.

“I love working with our people to help them enjoy their experience here and reach their career goals,” she said. “We have a really good reputation with our top workplaces designations, which helps us retain top talent, both internally and with our field of consultants.”

Last year, Technology Partners was named a Top Workplace for the fifth consecutive year by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The company’s positive reputation in St. Louis was one of the key factors that convinced Kayla to join the HR team.

Prior to Technology Partners, Kayla earned a master’s degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University and spent five years as a program coordinator at Mercy Hospital.

Kayla recently sat down with our communications team to talk through her background with Technology Partners and her thoughts on the overall team culture.

Can you describe your role as HR Administrator at Technology Partners?

I oversee a lot of our day-to-day human resources processes and lead our immigration department. I work very closely with new hires who require visas during onboarding. I also help them apply for green cards, extensions, and immigration lotteries.

That sounds like very important work, helping people stay compliant and earn a good living for their families.

That’s one of my favorite parts of the job. We work with a very diverse group of consultants, so helping them navigate all of the employment processes is critical for them. Building relationships with these hard-working, talented people is the most rewarding part of what we do.

How did your healthcare background help prepare you for the technology sector?

That’s the good thing about HR – you’re always focused on your people and the work you do can be pretty standard across different industries. I worked on different projects like process improvements, onboarding, program evaluation, and immigration work. I’m able to leverage all of that here with Technology Partners to help our employees and consultants.

What are some of the biggest benefits to working at Technology Partners?

First of all, our HR team is really tight-knit. We do a lot of activities together and have fun just getting to know each other. The people at Technology Partners are amazing to work with and we have a great time hanging out at our happy hours, company events, and really just on a day-to-day basis.

How have you grown as a professional during your time at Technology Partners?

I’ve been able to take on new roles or projects as they pop up. This has helped me become a better leader and stretched me as a professional. Being in this type of environment where I can see a problem and bring a solution to the table really helps diversify my role and keeps me energized.
