Are You Making The Mistake of Not Following Up After an Interview?

So you just had an interview for an interesting technology position with a top company in the industry. You feel confident about your overall performance and think you stand a great chance at getting a job offer. However, do you need to send a follow-up note to the interviewer, thanking them for the opportunity? 

With the goal of ending your job search with success, check out these insights on following up after interviewing. Whether you receive an offer or not, keeping the lines of communication open is typically the right approach. Let’s take a closer look at this important, but sometimes overlooked, issue. 

Always Follow Up With Each Person After an Interview  

Make it a point to send an email after an interview thanking each person with whom you interviewed. Simply put, it’s the professional approach. So get the contact info for everyone before the interview ends. Don’t feel awkward, as this is a common practice.  

Usually, sending an email is fine, but handwriting and mailing a personal note shows an extra touch. Whatever method you use, offer your thanks and restate your interest in their open position. Mention that you look forward to working with them in the future. 

Don’t Over Communicate With the Interviewers  

While sending a follow-up note is the professional approach, don’t constantly email interviewers asking about their hiring decision. Contacting the company over the phone is another bad idea. Jodi Chavez, president of Randstad Professionals and Life Sciences at Randstad USA, commented on the right track to take.  

“In general, the earlier you are in the process, the more quickly you should check-in. An initial phone interview with no response may require follow-up within the week. However, you may want to wait seven to 10 days after a second or third interview,” said Chavez. So keep her advice in mind, as the technology hiring process might require multiple interviews.  

Ultimately, make sure you ask the interviewer about the timeline of their decision. Respect their reply, which means not pestering them before their stated deadline. Also, inquire about their preferred means of communication before your initial interview ends. Once again, too much communication might ruin your chances at a great opportunity.
